Pub and restaurant in Sunderland

"The Cooper Rose - JD Wetherspoon" in Sunderland, England, is a well-known pub and restaurant that is part of the widespread Wetherspoon chain and has established a solid presence in the local dining scene. It opened in 2011 and is located in a building that was erected in 1903 on the site of former private residences once known as Albion Place. The name of the pub pays homage to the "Cooper Rose Vaccinator," an instrument used by Dr. Henry Renney, Sunderland's public vaccination officer in 1890—a small historical connection that gives the place a unique touch. The pub is a popular meeting spot for a diverse clientele, ranging from students and tourists to football fans who appreciate its proximity to the Stadium of Light.

Traditional British pub cuisine

The interior of the "Cooper Rose" spans multiple levels, offering a blend of modern functionality and a touch of historical charm. The ground floor features a large open bar with several hand pumps for real ales, while the upper floor provides a quieter atmosphere, ideal for dining or enjoying a relaxed drink with a view of the city. Following a comprehensive renovation in 2022, the pub boasts an impressive rooftop terrace that accommodates around 200 guests and offers a fantastic view of the Sunderland skyline—a highlight especially appreciated on warm days. The decor is typical of Wetherspoon: practical, with dark wood tones and an open design illuminated by large windows and a central skylight. There is also a small outdoor area on the ground floor that offers additional space.

Rooftop terrace with city view

The menu is varied and focuses on classic British pub fare with some international influences. Particularly popular is the Beer Battered Fish & Chips, a traditional dish featuring crispy fish and thick chips, often described as reliably delicious. The Gourmet Sirloin Steak is also a favorite—a juicy piece of meat served with sides like chips and grilled tomatoes, well-received by meat lovers. For breakfast enthusiasts, the Traditional Breakfast is a highlight, featuring sausages, bacon, and a perfectly fried egg to kickstart the day with energy. For dessert, the Chocolate Fudge Cake tempts with its warm, chocolatey richness that delights many guests. The drink selection is equally extensive, with a variety of real ales—including Wetherspoon's three core beers and rotating guest ales—along with freshly brewed Lavazza coffee.

Wetherspoon app for ordering

Service is typical of Wetherspoon: efficient and friendly, with staff striving to maintain order even during busy times. Many guests take advantage of the option to order through the Wetherspoon app, ensuring a fast service, especially on busy days such as during the football season or bank holidays. However, on such days, it can become crowded and loud, with some visitors reporting longer wait times or occasionally lukewarm food. The pub is family-friendly, with a relaxed attitude towards children until early evening, and offers amenities such as an elevator, making it accessible for individuals with mobility challenges.

Efficient and friendly service

Guest opinions are largely positive, with praise often directed towards the quality of the food, generous portions, and spectacular rooftop terrace. Many appreciate the central location and the opportunity to quickly enjoy a solid meal. However, some critical voices occasionally complain about cleanliness—citing sticky tables or overflowing bins—as well as some inconsistency in food preparation. Nonetheless, the overall impression is that the "Cooper Rose" delivers exactly what one expects from a Wetherspoon: reliable food and a wide beverage selection in a relaxed environment.

A unique aspect of the pub is its connection to the city's history and its versatility. The renovation not only added the rooftop terrace but also refreshed the interior, featuring artwork that honors Sunderland's shipbuilding heritage. It serves as both a starting point for a night out in the city and a destination for a cozy afternoon with friends or family. Regular events like quiz nights or live music contribute to the lively atmosphere, while its proximity to attractions like the Sunderland Museum enhances its appeal for tourists.

I had to ask the barmaid 2 or 3 times what my order was, she thought I was speaking a foreign language.

Havnt had food but others were and it looked lovely, beer lager etc is cheapest here than anywhere else, it has an upstairs with balcony and there is an outside at the back seating area ideal in nice weather but winter autumn etc would be cold as they dont have outside heaters which is weird , nice atmosphere its big inside, no music playing so you can actually have conversations meal etc in peace , we have seen kids in there and they do kids meals. All in all a canny pub

I don't like giving bad reviews but this was one of the saddest breakfasts iv ever had! Came our cold substituted eggs with 2 extra hash browns that was bone dry, I had about a tea spoon of beans on there and the sosages were like cardboard. I usually LOVE a wetherspoons breakfast but unfortunately this one wasn't nice. Lovely staff though and nice and clean pub.

Ordered a vege breakfast on the app. After 20 minutes wait they said there were no vege sausages. Had small breakfast instead. It came with no eggs as they had run out of these as well but didn't tell us just put an extra luke warm hash brown on the plate instead. Beans were stone cold. All in all not a good experience and wouldn't go back.

Hi, I belong to a vetrans group, and we had a wonderful meet-up yesterday. The Breakfast was as we ordered it. And it was hot. We come here because there are wheelchairs users and 1 folding mobility scooter user. We find access to the building easy. And being able to use wheelchairs at the table is a real bonus. Thank you Witherspoons staff. We will come back..

Cheap beer, loads of choice, food on offer is mostly microwaved, it's wetherspoon you get exactly what you pay for, I can't really fault it,

This was a brilliant pub for drinking, with a design blending modern with old properly especially the red lighting on the ceiling of the first floor! Counter is stylishly presented and the leather seating is nice, where I had a pint of Corona Extra.
